7 PENNIES

My husband and I recently celebrated our 7th anniversary, which meant gifts of copper – if you follow the charts that tell you which material, or substance, represents your anniversary year.

Even so, when I sat down to breakfast on the morning of our big day, I was surprised to find seven pennies on my placemat.

I was completely puzzled.

It took me a moment before I ‘got’ it. In the next instant, I was totally impressed by my husband’s cleverness.

In all my searching for an appropriate gift, I had never noticed the pennies in my wallet.

No worries, those pennies weren’t my actual gift.

But it did make me think about the many, obvious things we overlook everyday that are a little like those pennies.

I decided to turn those hypothetical pennies into some everyday hints for updating your décor – ideas that require little time or expense.

They’re simply there at your fingertips, ready for the picking.

If You Have It, Use It

When I was growing up, I learned that ‘good’ china should only be used on special occasions. At this point in my life I completely disagree.

I believe that whatever you own deserves to be used, no matter how precious it may seem.

Of course, the reverse is also true:

If You Don’t Use It, Get Rid of It

This makes perfect sense, really.

I mean, if you aren’t using the items that take up room in your closet, or kitchen cabinets, why hang on to them?

Worse still, if you are keeping things you don’t even like, please stop and ask yourself ‘why?’.

Surround Yourself With Things You Love

The easiest way to create a comfortable home environment that you love to come home to, is to furnish it with things you love.

Period. What could be easier?

Use All Five Senses

Designing a home is a visual process, no doubt about it. Yet, when it comes to making a house a home, all five senses must come into play.

Be sure to tap into the tactile quality of the finishes and fabrics you choose. Pay attention to acoustics and take the necessary steps to reduce uncomfortable noise levels. Reduce toxic odors by selecting low-VOC paints and finishes.

As for taste, well – this is where your kitchen can really shine. An efficient, organized layout allows for easy preparation of meals.

Less is More

Sometimes we accumulate more stuff than we need. Sometimes we over-schedule ourselves.

Both scenarios lead to unnecessary stress. In other words, excess of any kind can literally weigh you down and wear you out.

In order to restore order to your life, you will need to take charge of what you allow into it.

Keep It Simple

Have you ever noticed how an organized space, free of clutter, can literally free up your mind?

By taking steps to organize your home and your work space, you can actually simplify your life.

By peeling back the layers, your personality can shine through instead!

Tap Into Your Creativity

Whether or not you are aware of your artistic side, you were born creative.

I’ve met engineers who have a gift for music, and hi-tech types who feel equally at home in the kitchen. Meaning you are likely more creative than you think you are!

Chances are you could even come up with your own version of Seven Pennies!
